Who Else Wants A Well Behaved Dog?
I have owned dogs all my life. I have been the owner of everything from my first dog which was a Norwegian Elkhound to Labrador Retrievers, Border Collies, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinchers and of course I have owned a couple of the ultimate working dog the Belgian Malinois.
Even way before I became a professional dog trainer my dogs were always trained well. In fact I actually competed with my Elkhound when I was only 9 years old (a long time ago). When I became a trainer I always wanted a very well trained dog so that it could be used as a demo dog to show my clients what was possible with their dog. I didn’t want to be like the plumber with leaky pipes or the painter whose house needs painting.
Yes, I wanted well trained dogs. How about you? Would you like to own a well behaved dog that you can take places and be proud of where ever you go? Well that can happen for you and it is actually much easier than you think. Let me give you some ideas on how to get started on that goal.
I always tell new dog owner that they can have the best trained dog in the neighborhood if they will simply do 2 things.
1. Train your dog at least once a day for only 15 minutes.
2. Train your dog in at least 6 different places.
Let me elaborate on those 2 items. Number one, repetition is the number 1 principle of dog training. Just like with humans the more you do something the better you get at it, usually. The reason you should limit your formal training sessions to 15 minutes each is because any longer and you start to loose most dogs attention, just like with a child.
Training in different places is really important. It allows to the dog to learn that it needs to behave everywhere not just in the living room during formal training sessions. This is actually what we refer to as proofing. The dog is learning that it must perform everywhere even with distractions. Working with distractions is the final stage of dog training and is a must to have that perfect well behaved dog.
So do yourself and your dog a big favor and take the time to teach him what you expect of it to make your dog a great member of your family that you can really be proud of.
